The problem with the web is that the web is its own worst enemy. Since there’s so much stuff on it, it is all mostly unedited. So, rather than calling it “editing,” which is what it needs, people have invented the fancy word “curation.” And what does this mean for the future of the magazine? Explains Webber: “One of the things that editors do is aggregate. They aggregate it into a new magazine. A magazine is an aggregation of stories.

Fast Company Founder, and former Chairman of the Harvard Business Review Alan Webber believes the Apple ipad will change the game…especially for magazines; and he tells this in an interview with Steve Rosenbaum on Business Insider!

After seeing the incredible presentation on YouTube by Time Inc. – Sports Illustrated 1.5, we think that the ipad might just change the game for magazines too!

Webber talks in depth about “curation” and the need for MORE curators and editors, necessary to help us sort, enjoy and consume content.  We agree, and refer to this as Digital Curation

The ipad is a tool that will make curation more important than ever – a tool that will use content and design together to increase the reach and response of a message more than ever before.  The ‘right content’ designed and presented in a way that is engaging, informative and ultimately entertaining is what consumers of media will (do) demand.

We believe, that without realising it, this is what has been holding back e-readers like the Amazon Kindle from mainstream acceptance.  They just do not offer an experience that exceeds the interactive experience of a broadsheet newspaper or newstand magazine.  When asked about the future of ereaders, most people will remark; “I just like the experience of sitting down and reading a paper” – and we believe this is a completely valid reason to reject such tools.

The ipad, however, adds another dimension to the consumption of content, and as Alan Webber points out, it promises to change the magazine industry.  Webber uses a term ‘magazining’ to explain the impending shift in the industry…

We, like Alan Webber, believe that the ‘experience’ that the ipad represents is one that WILL see people move from the traditional mediums of newspapers and magazines to seek a new experience.  This is why digital curation will become important…publishers and content creators around the world will need to RETHINK the design of their messages; if not now, soon.

Speaking with Rosenbaum, when asked for a final thought, Webber responds: “Fasten your seat belt, things are about to take off”.
