what is digital curation?

Jacek Utko knew the importance of Curation when he spoke about how Design could save Newspapers at TED in 2009.

By applying new design principles, and giving greater emphasis to the ‘curation’ of content and information, Utko has helped some of Europe’s newspapers turn around their slumpng readership numbers.

When Alan Webber spoke about the emergence of the term ‘magazining’ and how devices like the Apple iPad will change the industry forever, we agreed that curation would become much more significant.

And this is where the curation of digital information becomes so much more exciting.  With the iPad, Apple has largely developed a software platform that will alter how we interact with digital content.

In the world of digital curation, the Apple iPad is the Musuem, where the curator has the platform now to organise their ‘wares’ (read: digital content) in a new and exciting way.

Brands like Time Inc. understand this, and you can bet they are running at 100mph to get as many of their ‘digital publications’ redesigned and ‘curated’ ready for the iPad effect!

We are excited about this.  We are excited that design is now starting to become more important in our everyday lives. We never saw the humble broadsheet newspaper as representing design; until now.  The magazine industry has been ‘curating’ for years..and doing a prety good job of it, but now we think they have taken the printed medium about as far as it can go.

The magazine has evolved through the introduction of colour, printing technology, and digital photography.  It was the accepted medium for curating the best articles, photos and advertising in the one place.  Magazine publishers have represented Information Curation.  Now curation; through the organisation and design of digital information will be referred to as Digital Curation.

Now does digital curation make more sense?
